The Challenge of Reading Publications in CFD
These are some points I have seen
during the research period I went through, which also proves to me that as a
researcher you require guidance from someone higher in Knowledge, which proves the main point that PhD students at universities
are assigned a supervisor.
1- Finding the points discussed in
a publications, you will see while reading the publication that some unfamiliar
words are used, the way the ideas are presented are in a random way which makes
it difficult to follow up what the author is on about.
2- The problem of missing derivation steps which are essential to understand how to implement the code.
3- Missing initial conditions that are not provided.
4-Some publications have mistakes which cause researchers not to get the required results especially in relation to signs of positive or negative, or forgetting some averaging term, or forgetting some averaging bar for a variable averaged several times, these can be really confusing.
5- The majority of times the full computational resources of the calculation are not exposed, in addition to what hardware was used.
6- You will find reading through the list of references gets you know where, where some publications are very old and have no relevance, while others seem to not really describe what you are looking for, even if you dig more into the reference of the reference you will find it a dead end.
7- Some times the reference is out of print, and this is something that I noticed that the majority of really good books are most of the time unavailable.
8-At some instances you will find the author has used a book of a different language than English.
9- Finding a very basic equation is mentioned while the really impotant steps for the problem are not there, meaning you will understand the equation but you will find you cannot understand the paragraph and cannot obtain similar results of the author.
10- Some times you can read the publication 100 times and it wont answer your questions and will not add any kind of new skill to you except on how to write and introduction and conclusion of the work.
11- Some times you will find that there is something very essential to know to conduct the experiment and its not explicitly mentioned in the paper, it might be cut down to simply we can take the value of 6.
12- You will find that trying to contact the academic (email, Phone,..) whos name is mentioned as one of the authors is not applicable.
13- You will see that at some instances that the author of the the publication knows nothing in the field of research.
